How does living together impact a future marriage?

I was reading a blog that discussed the topic "How to propose".  The author recommends :
Live together This isn’t 1950. If at all possible, ask your girlfriend to move in together before you propose or get married. A giant percentage of divorces could be avoided if couples were forced to live together and share all expenses and experiences for six months to a year prior to getting married (this is not based on any official study, just a hunch). "

The author acknowledges he has no scientific data to back up the claim that the divorce rate would go down if folks just lived together before marriage, yet feels it is could help.  Well, is there any data?  Could co-habitating before marriage reduce your odds of divorce?  Survey says.... NO.  In fact, the research shows that it actually INCREASES your odds of a future divorce!  In an interview with The National Review Online, author Michael McManus discuss his research findings highlighted in his book "Living Together: Myths, Risks and Answers".
